The United Kingdom has participated in the development of the Internet from the start. The Internet country code top-level domain representing the United Kingdom is .uk and is it is supported by Nominet. Nowadays, corporate users and households may have internet access through dial-up, cable, DSL, wireless, and other forms of connection.

Dial-up

Pipex launched dial-up internet access to the UK. This early technology has been phased out almost wholly to give way to broadband services, and is normally employed nowadays only for backup purposes.

Broadband

Broadband Internet access was introduced in the UK by numerous regional Cable television and telephone companies which eventually affiliated with each other to form bigger companies. With the onset of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, it has been possible to deliver Broadband service through the usual copper telephone lines. Moreover, Wireless Broadband is now being offered in selected places. As a result, Cable, DSL and Wireless services currently vie against each other for clientele.

Majority of UK households already have broadband in 2007, with a standard download speed of 4.6MBit/s. Packages bundling broadband Internet, digital TV, mobile phone and landline phone services were availed of by 40 per cent of UK homes in 2007, an increase of about 33% since last year. This success of this service sector is regarded as the chief motivation for the current expansion in online advertising and sales.
In the year 2006, six players have captured the UK market, with the biggest two having 51% market share, viz., Virgin with a 28% share, and BT with 23%.

The broadband industry in the UK has a market watchdog in the person of Ofcom. Ofcom reported in 2007 that on average, the British spend 36 minutes a day online.
